Diamonds in the Rough

1. Folks on the river, knew John for what he was,

A strange man with his very own plan he'd say, "Just because."

And critters in the woods would gather round, on a full moon night,

Circle around Johns old tar-paper shack, he had the sight.

Chorus: And Owls in the woods, rivers runnin' high,

Life on the edge is very tough.

You win some lose some, always gotta be,

Kind to one another, diamonds in the rough.

2. Catfishin' late at night, and the sun is almost here.

Come walkin' down the road to John's old joint, "Hey boys, fried eggs right here!"

He never knew a stranger always had a kind word, "Set down and stay."

Folks in town call us River Rats, but I prefer it this way.

Chorus: And Owls in the woods...

3. Old John was ancient, it seems he's old as dirt,

When the companies came and filled in all our swamps, man, you could see the hurt.

A couple of times we was standin' round and I caught him before he fell,

We talked about our loss when he finally moved on, he'd be missed by all.

Chorus: And Owls in the woods...

4. We walked by his house, saw a dumpster with all his stuff.

It didn't take no other sign, that was enough.

A new moon was in the trees, muddy water was gettin' high.

And right in the middle of that Springtime Flood, he chose to die.

Chorus: And Owls in the woods...

5. Well, no one had seen him, since the Flood began Her song.

By the time we was able to leave our homes, his Spirit was gone.

At 87 years he was movin' slow, and his color it showed bad health.

He was found with a note in an overstuffed chair, it said "share the wealth."

Chorus: And Owls in the woods, Rivers runnin' high,

Life on the edge gets very tough.

You win some you lose some always got to be,

Kind to one another, diamonds in the rough.
